Alum | Transportation Engineering

My name is Steffen Coenen and a graduate student in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department pursuing a Master’s degree in Transportation Engineering with a research focus on implementing sustainable modes of transportation. Originally from Germany, I previously completed a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Physics, with coursework and research on environmental and atmospheric topics like ozone-depleting substances.

I am conducting research as part of Don MacKenzie’s Sustainable Transportation Lab. With him and our team, I am currently focusing on understanding how the expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure can be conducted faster and more efficiently. Part of the work includes mapping a way for the Washington State Department of Transportation towards an analytical tool for prioritizing charging infrastructure and forecasting charging demands.

I am most passionate about creating solutions that aim to enlighten the public of the urgency and scale of the transition to a carbon-neutral world. As a member of the PCC Graduate Student Steering Committee (P-GraSC), I aim to be an engaged contributor to help address this impending issue by fostering engagement with university and public stakeholders.
