As we begin...
We respectfully acknowledge that our event this week is grounded on occupied Coast Salish land and that the University of Washington is on the homelands of the Duwamish people.
We pay respect to Coast Salish Elders past and present and extend that respect to their descendants and to all Indigenous people.
To acknowledge this land is to recognize its longer history and our place in that history; it is to recognize these lands and waters and their significance for the peoples who lived and continue to live in this region, whose practices and spirituality were and are tied to the land and the water, and whose lives continue to enrich and develop in relationship to the land, waters and other inhabitants today.

Meet Contributing Undergraduates
“Being a part of the PCC community for the past 2.5 years, I have learned the immense potential cross-disciplinary collaboration has in climate science and this has helped shape my goals as a scientist. I am grateful for the collaborative educational and outreach projects I have worked on, and will continue to prioritize climate communication and collaboration in graduate school and beyond.”
PCC Assistant (outgoing)
Surabhi is an undergraduate at UW studying Earth and Space Sciences and Atmospheric Sciences with a focus on climate, and will graduate in June 2021. She has been the PCC Assistant since October 2018.
"Even though I have not been part of the PCC for very long, I treasure the collaborative, educational, and inspirational opportunities presented within this community. Although the fight against climate change is dire, the efforts of this program demonstrate how much can be accomplished towards the goal of sustainability when we come together, and I am glad to be a part of it."
PCC Assistant (new)
Isaac is an undergraduate at the UW studying Oceanography and Environmental Studies, focusing on how climate change affects the ocean, how it impacts our lives, and what can be done about it. I became a PCC Assistant in December 2020, and I hope to continue serving in the position far into the future.
Artist
Emma is the artist behind our logo for the 2021 Winter Welcome! She is an undergrad at UW studying Speech and Hearing Sciences, is involved in climate activism (including UW Chapter for Institutional Climate Action), and uses her art to focus on the reality but also hope for a better future. Emma also surfs, swims, and of course, creates beautiful artwork. Follow her on instagram @emmamakesstuffforfun.
“I feel like many people associate the climate crisis to despair, but through our activism and through the continuation of research in this field, I am hopeful that we can sustain and love our beautiful planet as shown in this painting! A future of flourishing organisms and healthy oceans is only what the next generation deserves, and nothing less.”
PCC Assistant (new)
Maddie is an undergrad at the UW, studying Marine Biology, Aquatic and Fisheries Science, and Public Policy. I’m interested in science communication and ways to make research more accessible. I became a PCC Assistant in December 2020, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds!
“Assisting with helping to create the first virtual Winter Welcome with PCC has been an amazing experience, to see how diverse but interconnected the departments involved are, to learn about new climate research on campus, to be a part of such a driven team, it’s been great. I love the positivity, and the drive this program creates, and I hope this event captures that feeling for creating a better future for us all.”
